Birgit Gebhardt trained as a traditional goldsmith in Germany and passed her journeyman exam in 1991. Finding jewellery designs in the backwaters of Bavaria too conventional, she did a degree in art history, archaeology and philosophy in Germany, then an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, specialising in period jewellery.
Her design concept islarge, dramatic and glamorous for people who are not shrinking violets and don't need to be size 8. Her work is inspired by 60s horror films, bizarre animals, showgirls and Renaissance paintings. Despite the size of the structures, they are very light and comfortable to wear. They are curently all the rage in fetish clubland.
