WINNER Baise Moi

Director: Virginie Despentes.

Seldom are cinema goers presented with such a strong and emotive hardcore film as Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi's adaptation of Despentes' novel by the same name.

A vivid portrayal of (as Diva magazine put it) "sex, violence and female frienship". Courageous, nihilistic and upfront in its dealing with issues of sexuality, rape, forced sex, prostitution, and gender, in a context of social and economic deprivation.

Performed by a multi-ethnic cast and with a mainly 'angry rock' soundtrack, the film is commendable for its documentary style realism and believable cast- though some of the violence perpetuated by the two female lead characters seem to belong more comfortably in a world fantasy and even computer games than real life!

A rare insight, and a dire warning to mainstream society of how angry people can get when they are let down by those around them. Film-making with guts, heart and soul. The two directors certainly took a big 'jump without the bungee' with this film... Originally banned in France.
