Wendy - Soho Maid

Wendy was the maid in a recent TV programme about a Soho brothel which was part of the BBC1 Vice series.

We voted for her because of her outgoing, honest, and down-to-earth attitude to her job, and the motherly way she welcomes clients into the brothel. Brave and courageous, letting the stigma from society slide off her back, she is an inspiration to her industry."

bio/statement about my work

I have been working in the sex industry for 20 years. For the last seven years, I've been based in Soho, a place that I truly love.

I believe that the women who enter this industry should do it at their own free will. As a maid, I am encouraging the girls to work for themselves and set clear goals for the future. I try to create a happy, relaxed and safe environment. Sex work is hard work and it's important that girls and the clients feel at ease.

A maid's job is not just opening the doors - you have to be a good listener, a good cook, a true friend. The girls that I work with think of me as a second Mum and I am proud of that. I often feel that we are all part of one extended family.

I believe that the current legislation, which penalises brothel keeping and maiding, with up to seven years in prison, is stupid and hypocritical. It ignores a basic fact of life: prostitution is not going to stop. Rather then trying to obstruct and hinder us, the government should make sure that the off-street sex industry is a safe, healthy and clean environment.
